Please sign here.

We must really be married now. For the first time in my life (and Tyson's) we are having furniture delivered. On a truck. To our apartment. It does not come in a box, we are not putting it together: no-assembly-required. Is this real life?

We bought a taupe sofa (after months of online searching) from Crate&Barrel called "Silhouette." Does anyone know where to get those plastic covers? Just joking...but not really. I plan to get some crazy pillows to spice it up since it's a pretty standard color. More pictures to come when the nice men bring it up a set of very steep stairs and wrangle it into place.

Ever so proper sofa winks at tradition with a fresh new color and playful new proportions. Same-height tight back and arms shelter with subtle curves, punctuated with a clever graceful rolled arm and eye-catching corner base miters. Lustrous soft-textured weave accentuates the unexpected silhouette.

Chicago History Museum

Yelp hosted a "Shop Local" Holiday bash at the Chicago History Museum on Dec 7.
We browsed through several of the galleries, but I really need to go back because
it was much more interesting than I thought it would be.

Gorgeous chandelier in the entrance to the main hall.

Chiang Mai, Phuket & Bangkok, Thailand

I divided our 2 week trip into three albums based on the city. We spent about equal parts in each area, but didn't take as many in Phuket since you can only take so many of the same beach shots. You get the idea, it was insanely gorgeous that a place like that exists on this planet and you can get there in 24 hours. It was a grueling 24-36 hours on the way back, but certainly worth it. I can say that now that I'm home. And I really don't mind airports, Bangkok's airport had amazing people watching and Toyko's airport was eerily quiet...Not like Chicago where you have people sprawled out everywhere eating McDonald's, sleeping on the floor and yelling at their kids. I traveled in full on comfort mode: track pants (they were lululemon, so at least I had some class) and cotton t-shirts. Of course on the way back from Japan everyone on the plane was a businessman dressed in a full suit. Not this lady. If I'm traveling in cattle class, I will dress like it!

Phi Phi Islands and Chiang Mai were my two favorite places to visit. Off the beaches, Phuket was just another sprawling beach destination busting at its seams. Bangkok was crazy chaotic and although amazing to visit, gave me a headache with all of the smog after a couple days. I would love to go back and visit Thailand, but would not spend it in Bangkok. I get the jist; it's the true definition of a hot mess. It makes a city like Chicago seem very organized and tame. I can't describe the driving on Phuket or in Bangkok. You literally can do whatever you want. A bus was stopped in the middle of the street letting people off, our car had to dodge it. Whole families were on motorbikes without helmets. Cars were driving on the wrong side of the road, swerving or just generally driving at dangerous speeds. We spent half the time gritting our teeth and the other half laughing in amazement.

The first 2 pictures are from elephant trekking near Chiang Mai. The last is from Wat Doi Suthep, a temple on top of a mountain outside Chiang Mai.

Double Stuffed Mailbox

This is our mailbox. And THIS happens nearly every day. It's maddening! Poor wedding invites and neatly written thank you's make it unscathed half way across the country and end up here. Crumpled, smudged and waiting to exhale.

Grand Palace - Bangkok

We are back from Thailand with little fat Buddah bellies from stuffing our faces with crazy/delcious/weird Thai food for two weeks. We took about 1,000 pictures and 40 videos - so much more to come. This is at the Grand Palace in Bangkok which was constructed in 1782 by Rama I. The day we visited, the King's son visited to change the Buddah's costume from rainy to winter (read: "winter" is 90 degrees).

Fall in Lawrence, KS

Taken on 10-10-10 from a moving car with my iPhone and it's still magnificent; happy fall.

Is this a maple tree? I'm not sure, but if I lived in Lawrence I'd buy a house with a big old tree like this one. And also I'd buy a leaf blower...

Typographic Maps - Cartography. Visualization. Design.

Courtney (aka CB0E.) sent me these typetastic maps from Axis Maps. Go to the blog to see more cities beyond Chicago;  they aren't even crazy-expensive like you (I did) might assume.
mapping / art project Typographic Maps. Created as a labor of love, these unique maps accurately depict the streets and highways, parks, neighborhoods, coastlines, and physical features of the city using nothing but type. Only by manually weaving together thousands upon thousands of carefully placed words does the full picture of the city emerge. Every single piece of type was manually placed, a process that took hundreds of hours to complete for each map. Take a look at our blog for more on how these maps were made.
We offer high quality poster-sized prints for $30, or a variety of other size and media options.

Wishlist: Organic apple farm & cidery in Flushing, MI

I have been researching apple orchards in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Indiana-Michigan area for the last few weeks to see which ones are the best to visit. I ran across Almar Orchards this morning... It's about a 4 hour drive from where we live so we could make it in a day trip or stay the night over the weekend if we really wanted to make a getaway out of it. From their website:

There are tractor pulled wagon rides, horse pulled wagon rides, barrel train rides on weekends in the Fall. Every day the smell of apples, popcorn, sweet cider and doughnuts, cakes and apple dumplings fill the air. And let's not forget the mulled cider in the fall and apple and berry slush throughout the Summer.
I would like to reiterate: Every day the smell of apples, popcorn, sweet cider and doughnuts, cakes and apple dumplings fill the air.

Seriously. What could smell better?

Also in my interneting, I discovered a new apple variety called "SweeTango," from the same breeders who established the Honeycrisp. I need to try it.

"SweeTango® has a deep rich red color compared to the striped red over yellow background color of our Door County grown Honeycrisp." Read more about it here: http://www.woodorchard.com/sweetango.htm
SweeTango
SweeTango® is a variety from the University of Minnesota’s apple breeding program. The same people who brought us Honeycrisp! It is a cross between Honeycrisp (the mom) and Zestar (the dad).

Pumpkin Patch - Lawrence, KS

I haven't been to a pumpkin patch in YEARS. Maybe even decades. Some places like Casa Bonita or Joyland aren't as cool as you remember (in fact most are just scary and depressing.) I'm happy to report this adventure was just as fun as my stored memories. Rest of pictures are here: http://picasaweb.google.com/ashley.bolton/PyleSAtThePumpkinPatch#

Tyson's Birthday

We celebrated Tyson's birthday at home this year; it was relaxing to stay in, cook and enjoy each other's company. You never know what you're really missing kitchen-tool-wise until you have it. My Le Creuset French Oven and immersion blender (and attachments) are proving to be crucial!

I made some tasty snacks including his favorite cucumber sandwiches, spanakopita wedges, patatas bravas and a Spanish inspired chicken + rice dish (not pictured). It was followed by a Jayhawk cake. My mission is to perfect the Jayhawk cake for next year.

St. Louis Trip (JJ & Amanda's wedding)

Check this out- I saw an old fire engine driving around downtown St. Louis this weekend. It had a bunch of kids in the back, too.

Also, here is a picture from the wedding we went to - this is at the Piper Palm House in Tower Grove Park.
We stayed at the Westin Downtown. The rooms were fantastic. I always judge a hotel by the bathrobes. It passed. Only glaring issue was the Cardinals sign outside our windows. Reminded me of the chicken episode of Seinfeld.

Lou Taubert Ranch Outfitters - Billings, MT

This Wyoming & Montana outfitter has been around since 1919 and claims to have more than 10,000 cowboy boots. They had some pretty sweet sparkly denim outfits, fancy pearl snaps and of course, COWBOY HATS. I bought Tyson a shirt for this birthday, but couldn't wait to give it to him so now I have to find another present.

"Slouchy Nutmeg"

I've always loved Orla Kiely for her cutesy, leafy designs (see: Pretty Prints, http://ashbashful.blogspot.com/2009/01/blog-post.html) but this bag is stunning. And absolutely out of my price range at $495, but I had to gawk/share. I found it at Art Effect, a popular boutique in my 'hood, but I'm sure you can find it at other places. I wish I could have this bag for fall, even the name gives a sense of cool weather, spiced lattes and tall boots.

Q: Ashley, what did you do today?

It was a tough decision on which photograph would make its debut, but I used my Twitter one that rocks a KU shirt.

Trebes Park

Tyson and I made sandwiches and ate lunch in the park across the street from our house today. I wonder what it was like in the 40s when the city first bought it...
In the early 1940s, the City of Chicago purchased land in the near north side Lincoln Park neighborhood for creation of a 44th Ward Recreation Center. The city's Bureau of Parks and Recreation transformed a two-story brick rowhouse into a community center, naming it the Robert Trebes Recreation Center on March 18, 1943. Within a few years, the bureau had constructed a spray pool, a sand box, and two playing fields on adjacent property to the south.
In the late 1950s, the Trebes Recreation Center was demolished, along with the other structures on the block.
In 1958, the Board of Education began constructing the new Oscar Meyer Elementary School on the northern half of the block. The Trebes Park property also passed into the hands of the Board of Education; however the Chicago Park District began maintaining the park the following year. The Park District and the Board of Education soon began joint operations at the school and park, an arrangement that continues today. In 1991, the Board of Education transferred full ownership of Trebes Park to the Park District. The Sheffield Neighborhood Association, in conjunction with the Park District, led the community effort to renovate the park.
In the early 1990's, funded projects include tree planting around the perimeter parkways, installing an iron ornamental "prairie style" fence, the ornamental metal park benches, garbage containers, walkway lights and installing the ornamental iron gazebo in the park plaza entrance. At that time, the Park District constructed a soft surface playground. The new playground was funded through a generous bequest of Dorothy Melamerson, a retired local school teacher whose savings have paid for a number of park improvements in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, the Sheffield Neighborhood Association and community neighbors.
In addition, the Sheffield Neighborhood Association has raised funds for the numerous improvements to the park. Taking personal pride in their local park volunteers have spent thousand of hours in gardening and other greening initiatives. The Sheffield Neighborhood Association continues to maintain the park and the "award winning gardens" as the pride of the community.

Eye See You

Chicago's very own three-story eyeball, under construction. (At Dearborn & Jackson.)

You can read more about Chicago artist Tony Tasset's project here.

From Paper Source: "Rubber stamping with powdered sugar"

Totally awesome: using a rubber stamp, powdered sugar, food coloring and water to stamp designs on a glass plate. I would also love to see this on a corner of a square, white plate with dessert on it.

The Darjeeling Limited

I asked our travel agent to cut the flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and instead travel by train in a sleeper car over night. It's a 9-10 hour train trip ...
"The scenery on the last third of the trip up into the mountains approaching Chiang Mai is particularly good, you can awake to the pretty mountain scenery as the train enters the highlands and traverses Doi Kuntan National Park and mountains between Lampang and Lamphun. And even on the sleeper, watching the sun rise from the train in the morning is a great experience. From Chiang Mai Railway Station you can take a tuk tuk or songtaew (red truck) into the centre of town."
And, it does, have air conditioning.

Look at these Shoes

I think I'm liking these heels for the big day. They are the perfect height - 2 3/4 inch. I'm already tall (so no thank you to 4" heels) and this exact height of shoe will allow my dress to remain unaltered along the bottom hem. They are very simple and inexpensive. After hours of looking at beautiful shoes from Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman, I think I've finally decided I'd rather buy a moderately priced pair and save the extra for the honeymoon. They are dyeable - maybe a beautiful coral to match our accent color?
